Formerly Known as Sarah, a solo play written and performed by Joyce Griffen, is about Madam C.J. Walker (1867-1919), creator of specialized Black hair care products for African American women, and the first female self-made millionaire in the US.

JOYCE GRIFFEN
JOYCE GRIFFEN (AEA) is a Writer /Director /Actress /Jazz Vocalist who has performed in productions at The Negro Ensemble Company and New Federal Theatre, among others. A Best Lead Actress finalist in the 2023 Broadway World Off-Off Broadway awards, Joyce’s full-length farce THE SCRIPT IN THE CLOSET had a successful 2024 run at La MaMa E.T.C. Joyce’s directing credits include Rebecca Gillman’s SPINNING INTO BUTTER, and Ed Bullins’ THE WORK GETS DONE. A senior Social-Emotional Learning skills builder and conflict resolution Staff Developer, Joyce has long been entrenched in work important to people’s lives. She feels that performing in this production combines both worlds.
